图书简介
Drawing on geographical concepts such as landscape, place and national identity, this book charts the development of ‘cultures of British outer space’ from the early visionary ideas of science fiction writers to the current popular cultures surrounding the first British Astronaut of the European Space Agency, Major Tim Peake. As well as focusing on the blurred boundaries between technological and popular scientific cultures, the book inserts the previously-overlooked British cultures of outer space, into cultural histories and geographies of outer space. It examines the emergence of the British Interplanetary Society in 1930s Britain and its significance in the post-war period. It explores the role of influential figures such as Arthur C Clarke and Patrick Moore, as well as concepts for humanity’s imagined future in outer space that were promoted by the Society.
