图书简介
One of the best-known theories of humor is that we laugh when we feel superior to someone else. This book argues that twentieth-century American poets, especially those who are somehow outsiders, do the opposite: they laugh when they recognize what they have in common with other people. By looking at how poets like W. H. Auden and Marianne Moore use laughter, we can learn what poets think their art accomplishes; who they think they resemble; what their politics are; and how poetry and laughter have shaped each other over the last century.
