Cyanobacteria constitute the most widely distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes found in almost all realms of the earth and play an important role in Earth’s nitrogen and carbon cycle. They are considered as the pioneer of oxygenic photosynthesis and played a very important role in oxygenation of the earth’s atmosphere 2.5 billion years ago. The transformation of reducing atmosphere to oxidizing atmosphere was a turning point in evolutionary history of the earth and due to that the present life form is possible. They are the closest living relatives of the ancient endosymbiont that gave rise to modern-day chloroplasts.
