Beyond Foundations is the first book directed specifically to those experienced in the field of academic advising,  addressing what experienced academic advisors must know and do in order to be effective master advisors for students, on their campuses, and within their profession.Beginning with focused discussions of the foundations of the advising profession, the book addresses present advising practice. Included is a chapter discussing how the three pillar documents of the advising profession (NACADA Core Values of Academic Advising, NACADA Concept of Academic Advising, and CAS Standards for Academic Advising Programs) help experienced advisors master their various roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the book contains a discussion of what to consider when helping the increasingly diverse student body delineate their educational goals, outlining what strategies can be used to help these students meet their goals. The authors provide an overview of how advisors can assess whether they meet the expectations of todays various constituencies (e.g., students, parents, faculty, administration, and other outside agencies) and advance the advising practice. Finally, Beyond Foundations focuses on emerging trends in academic advising, such as external issues, the nature of advising, advising as a profession, and advising as a field of inquiry. Each chapter includes steps for addressing the issues discussed within the chapter, ending with issues to consider and discuss with colleagues.
