A Companion to Russian Cinema provides a thorough guide to the cinema of pre-Revolutionary Russia, Soviet era, and post-Soviet Russian cinema. Refraining from a chronological or generic approach, the volume offers a very different form of knowledge organization, which connects more readily with debates in mainstream film-studies programs; information is organized according to distinct oppositions or conceptual clusters, such as space and time; sound and image; and regional/national/ international. This provides a range of prisms through which films, filmmakers, the context of filmmaking and film studies and theories can be viewed. Twenty-five essays from well established and emerging scholars interrogate the subject fully in five sections, covering issues of national identity vs. globalisation; cinemas relationship to its audience in a state-driven production and in a free market; technical innovations and their impact on film language, as well as the role of scriptwriters; film settings in the centre or periphery, in the past, present or future; and, finally, a section offering portraits of some significant directors, whose work has hitherto been neglected in English-language scholarship. Each section is introduced by the volume editor, outlining the rationale of the contents and filling any possible gaps in the narrative.
